So hubby’s birthday was coming up in a few days and was clueless as to what theme would be ideal for summer, clueless and browsing through ideas and themes researching a theme that wouldn’t be too cheesy and yet fun and vibrant.
I asked hubby what flavor cake would he prefer for his birthday? he spontaneously shouted out ‘Orange”! I’d love an orange flavored cake! And then it clicked to me that would be a wonderful idea! orange is such a citrusy summer fruit and would go well for a birthday, and so the theme was set!
I was quite excited to have a color themed birthday and it was fun planning out the details!
- 3-4 carrots
- White bread
- Orange flavored Macaroons (Store bought)
- Orange flavored jellies
- Puck Whip Cream spray can
- Small orange juice
- Half a dozen oranges
- a couple of clementines or mandarins
- Cake flour
- Confectionary sugar
- Vanilla extract
- Cheddar Cheese Popcorns (Micorwave)
- Fruits for fruit salad
- 2 Big bottles of Fanta
The cake was a basic Orange Chiffon Cake and wanted a rustic naked cake look since hubby wasn’t a big fan of frosting.
Orange Chiffon Cake
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups sugar, divided
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 6 large eggs, separated
- 2 tablespoons finely grated orange zest and 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
- 1/4 cup cold water
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and 1 cup sugar. Make a well in the center of flour mixture. Add oil, egg yolks, orange zest and juice, and 1/4 cup cold water; whisk batter until smooth.
With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, whisk egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form. Gradually add the remaining 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time; and continue to beat until stiff peaks form. Using a flexible spatula, gently fold half of egg-white mixture into batter. Fold in remaining egg-white mixture until combined.
Pour batter into a 10-inch footed cake pan and bake until a cake tester inserted near center of the cake comes out clean, 55 to 60 minutes. Remove from oven; invert, still in the pan, onto a baking sheet. Let cool completely. Run a sharp knife around edges to release cake.
Orange Cheese Glaze For Cake
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 8 oz cream cheese
- 3/4 cup confectionary sugar
- 1 tbsp orange zest
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
With a mixer, whip heavy cream until soft peaks form
Add in confectionary sugar, vanilla extract, and orange zest, continue whipping until still peaks form
Add in whipped cream cheese (Whip cream cheese before) until combined well
Place one layer of cake on cake stand, spread frosting on top and then add the next layer of cake and frosting on top

The birthday was a hit! everyone loved the spread and food, hubby was very impressed and had no idea about the theme, except for the cake lol.
As you can see, it was an easy theme, suitable for anyone and any age and a perfect theme for summer!
